About the Retaining Wall Design Studio

The Retaining Wall Design Studio designs cantilever and counterfort retaining walls by the limit state method of IS 456:2000. You enter the height of retained earth, soil properties, surcharge and material grades; the tool sizes the wall and shows every check.

What it does

Earth pressure on the wall from the retained fill and surcharge
Stability checks against overturning, sliding and soil bearing pressure
Design of the stem, toe and heel slabs — and the counterforts for counterfort walls
Reinforcement for each part with a printable design sheet and section sketch

When to use cantilever or counterfort

Cantilever walls are economical for moderate heights; for taller walls (commonly beyond about 6–7 m) counterforts tie the stem to the base and reduce the stem thickness and steel.
