Questions

Q1.Population forecast for determining future water demand is best judged by

  1. Arithmetic increase
  2. Geometrical increase
  3. Graphically by comparison with similar town
  4. Ultimate density of population
Show answer

Answer: (d) Ultimate density of population

Water-supply works are designed for a design period of about 30 years, so the forecast has to be defensible over a long horizon. Arithmetic, geometric and incremental methods merely extrapolate past census figures; they carry no information about how much population the town can physically hold.

Q2.Average water demand of a small town in India is estimated on the basis of

  1. Domestic use
  2. Domestic use + Public use + Wastage
  3. Domestic use + Public use
  4. Domestic use + Public use + wastage + Firedemand
Show answer

Answer: (b) Domestic use + Public use + Wastage

For a small Indian town the total quantity to be supplied is built up as Q = domestic + public (institutional and civic) + losses and wastage Domestic demand dominates at about 135 lpcd; public demand (schools, hospitals, gardens, road washing, public fountains) adds roughly 10 lpcd; and unaccounted-for water — leakage, theft, wastage — is taken at 15 % of the total, which is far from negligible and must never be omitted.

Q3.Ground water normally has the following characteristics

  1. Low mineralised content
  2. Soft
  3. pH below 7
  4. High dissolved oxygen
Show answer

Answer: (c) pH below 7

Groundwater percolates through soil and rock, and the water in the root zone is charged with carbon dioxide from root respiration and the decay of organic matter. That CO2 dissolves to give carbonic acid, so groundwater as pumped is normally slightly acidic, pH a little below 7. The same aggressive CO2 is what dissolves calcium and magnesium out of the strata on the way down.

Q4.An impounding reservoir is used in water supply system to

  1. evenly distribute water amongst the consumers
  2. maintain a uniform rate of supply to the township
  3. maintain an equitable pressure in the distribution system
  4. obtain a uniform quality of water
Show answer

Answer: (b) maintain a uniform rate of supply to the township

An impounding (storage) reservoir is created by throwing a dam across a river valley. River flow in India is wildly seasonal — most of the annual runoff arrives in three or four monsoon months and the dry-weather flow may fall below the town's requirement. The reservoir stores the surplus of the wet months and releases it through the lean months, so that a uniform rate of supply can be drawn all the year round.

Q5.The mode of sinking small diameter deep tubewells in alluvial soil is

  1. Rotary drill with water jet
  2. Driving it into the soil to reach the aquifer
  3. Boring with suitable anger
  4. Reverse rotary method
Show answer

Answer: (a) Rotary drill with water jet

Alluvial deposits of the Ganga basin are unconsolidated sand, silt and clay carrying prolific aquifers at depths of 100–300 m.

Q6.Valve to be used at the summit of a transmission line is

  1. Reflux valve
  2. Air Valve
  3. Pressure relief valve
  4. Scour valve
Show answer

Answer: (b) Air Valve

A long transmission main follows the ground profile, and at every summit the hydraulic gradient comes closest to the pipe. Two things happen there: air released from solution and air drawn in during filling collects at the high point and forms an air lock that throttles the flow, and if the pressure falls to vapour pressure the column can separate.

Q7.An infiltration gallery is used to obtain water from

  1. a well sank in a river bed
  2. a trench dug in riger bed
  3. perforated pipe laid in a trench in a river bed
  4. impounded reservoir
Show answer

Answer: (c) perforated pipe laid in a trench in a river bed

An infiltration gallery is a horizontal intake: a perforated or porous pipe (or a masonry conduit with open joints) laid in a trench cut in the water-bearing gravels of a river bed or bank, generally 3–6 m below the bed and surrounded by graded gravel. River water and the shallow aquifer seep radially into the conduit and flow by gravity to a collecting sump, from which it is pumped.

Q8.Excessive concentration of sodium in water

  1. is toxic to plants
  2. causes colour problem
  3. Prevents corrosion of metal surface
  4. causes taste and odour problem
Show answer

Answer: (a) is toxic to plants

Sodium is not a health hazard at the concentrations met in water supplies, but when such water is used for irrigation a high proportion of sodium is destructive. Sodium ions displace calcium and magnesium on the clay exchange complex, the soil crumb structure breaks down, and the soil becomes deflocculated, sticky when wet and hard when dry, with permeability falling almost to nil. The plant then suffers both from waterlogging and from the osmotic effect of the salt.

Q9.Suggested residual chlorine in drinking water supplies, after 30 minites of contact, is normally

  1. 1 to 2 mg/l
  2. 0.6 to 0.9 mg/l
  3. 0.2 to 0.5 mg/l
  4. 0.1 to 0.15 mg/l
Show answer

Answer: (c) 0.2 to 0.5 mg/l

Chlorination is designed to leave a free residual chlorine of 0.2 mg/l after 30 minutes of contact at the far end of the plant, and IS 10500 accepts 0.2 to 0.5 mg/l in the distribution system. The residual is deliberately kept: it is the working proof that the chlorine demand of the water has been satisfied, and it guards against contamination entering through leaking joints and negative pressures in the mains. The dose is set from the break-point chlorination curve.

Q10.Water demand for a town of given population is function of

  1. standard of living
  2. size of the town
  3. distance of the water source
  4. type of water source
Show answer

Answer: (a) standard of living

Once the population is fixed, what remains is the per capita demand, and that is governed above all by the standard of living and habits of the people. A community with house service connections, flush closets, bathrooms, washing machines, coolers and lawns draws three or four times as much as one served from stand-posts.
