Questions

Q1.The critical load for long columns can be calculated for one end fixed and other hinged condition as per Euler's formula

  1. π²EI/L²
  2. 2π²EI/L²
  3. 4π²EI/L²
  4. π²EI/4L²
Show answer

Answer: (b) 2π²EI/L²

Euler's buckling load is always written as Pcr = π²EI/Le², where Le is the effective length — the distance between two successive points of contraflexure (points of zero moment) on the buckled shape. For a column fixed at one end and hinged at the other, Le = 0.707L = L/√2, so Pcr = π²EI/(L/√2)² = 2π²EI/L² The four standard cases are worth memorising as multiples of the hinged-hinged load: both hinged 1×, one fixed–one hinged 2×, both fixed 4×, one fixed–one free 0.25×.

Q2.The variation of the horizontal shear stress in the flange of an I section is

  1. Lunear
  2. Parabola
  3. Elliptical
  4. Cubic Parabola
Show answer

Answer: (a) Lunear

Shear stress from the flexure formula is τ = VAȳ/(Ib). In the flange of an I-section the shear flows horizontally, parallel to the flange, and the width b used is the flange thickness tf, which is constant. Moving in from a free tip, the area moment Aȳ grows in direct proportion to the distance from the tip, so the horizontal shear stress rises linearly from zero at the flange tip to a maximum at the web face.

Q3.The normal strain in axial direction is 1.25 mm/m due to application of an axial tensile force. If Poisson's ratio is 0.3, the volumetric strain in the body will be

  1. 4×10⁻⁴
  2. 3.4×10⁻⁴
  3. 1.7×10⁻⁴
  4. 2×10⁻⁴
Show answer

Answer: (a) 4×10⁻⁴

Under a uniaxial tensile stress the lateral strains are −με each, so the volumetric strain is ev = εx + εy + εz = ε(1 − 2μ) With μ = 0.3 the multiplier is 1 − 0.6 = 0.4: a bar in simple tension gains only 40 % of the volume its axial stretch alone would suggest. Note that at μ = 0.5 the multiplier vanishes — that is the incompressible limit, and it is why rubber and saturated clay under undrained loading are treated as constant-volume materials.

Q4.In elasticity

  1. both stress and strain are equally important
  2. strain is more fundamental
  3. stress is more fundamental
  4. yield stress is fundamental
Show answer

Answer: (b) strain is more fundamental

Elasticity is defined kinematically: a body is elastic if it recovers its original shape completely on removal of load. That definition is written entirely in terms of deformation. Strain is what a gauge actually measures — a change of length divided by a length — while stress is an inferred internal quantity, defined only through an assumed constitutive law and equilibrium.

Q5.Sagging moment may develop at support of a continous beam if

  1. rotation occurs
  2. lateral load acts
  3. yielding of support
  4. all of the above
Show answer

Answer: (c) yielding of support

Over an interior support a continuous beam normally carries a hogging (negative) moment. That moment is the price of continuity — the support holds the beam up against the natural sag of the adjacent spans. If the support yields (settles), that restraint is relaxed.

Q6.For unstiffened web, the slenderness ratio adopted to check web bucking is

  1. h1/tu
  2. (h1√3)/tu
  3. (tw√2)/h1
  4. (h1√2)/tw
Show answer

Answer: (b) (h1√3)/tu

In web-buckling checks the web between the flanges is treated as a strut of length equal to the clear depth d1, carrying the load dispersed at 45° through the flanges down to the neutral axis. Both ends of that strut are restrained by the flanges, so the effective length is taken as d1/2 for an unstiffened web.

Q7.The permissible stress for crippling of a steel beam is equal to

  1. 0.75 fy
  2. 0.66 fy
  3. 0.8 fy
  4. 0.6 fy
Show answer

Answer: (a) 0.75 fy

Web crippling (also called web bearing) is a local crushing failure of the web just above the root of the flange-to-web fillet, where the concentrated reaction is squeezed into the thin web.

Q8.Development length of bars of dia φ as per IS code

  1. φσst/(3τbd)
  2. 2φσst/(3τbd)
  3. 4φσst/(τbd)
  4. φσst/(4τbd)
Show answer

Answer: (d) φσst/(4τbd)

Development length is fixed by equating the force the bar can carry to the force the bond can transfer over the embedded length: (πφ²/4) σs = (πφ Ld) τbd Cancelling πφ gives the IS 456 Cl. 26.2.1 expression Ld = φ σs / (4 τbd) Note the structure of the result: the 4 is simply the ratio of area (φ² term) to perimeter (φ term). For deformed bars in tension τbd is increased by 60 %, and in compression by a further 25 %.

Q9.As per IS:800, bending moment for design of purlins can be taken as

  1. WL/10
  2. WL/15
  3. WL/8
  4. WL/12
Show answer

Answer: (a) WL/10

Purlins span between roof trusses and are supported at every truss, so they behave as continuous members rather than simple beams. IS 800 accordingly permits the simplified design moment M = WL/10 where W is the total load (dead + live + wind, resolved normal to the roof slope) on one span and L the centre-to-centre spacing of the trusses. The same clause allows angle purlins to be proportioned empirically by d ≥ L/45 and b ≥ L/60, with the span in mm.

Q10.The maximum economical spacing of trusses is recommended as

  1. L/5
  2. 2L/5
  3. L/3
  4. 3L/5
Show answer

Answer: (c) L/3

Truss spacing is an economic optimum, not a strength requirement. As the spacing widens, fewer trusses are needed (cost falls), but the purlins, sheeting and bracing span further and grow heavier (cost rises). The total-cost curve is flat-bottomed over roughly L/5 to L/3 of the truss span, so the upper economical limit is about L/3. Typical practice: spans up to 15 m are trussed at 3–4.5 m centres, and spans of 15–30 m at 4.5–6 m centres.
